Performing Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (Shah)

Performing Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Researcher Objectives

Dr. Nilam C. Shah, an assistant professor of chemistry at Lake Forest College in Illinois, specializes in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), localized surface plasmon spectroscopy, and nanoparticle fabrication. Dr. Shah teaches several introductory chemistry and instrumental analysis courses.

“FERGIE is so simple to use; we have seen great SERS results.”

— Dr. Nilam C. Shah

Before coming to Lake Forest College, Dr. Shah served as a research assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University. Prior to her appointment at Northwestern, she completed her Ph.D. and postdoctoral research fellowship in Prof. Richard Van Duyne’s group.

“I can teach undergraduates with no experience in optics or spectroscopy to operate the system in less than one hour.”

FERGIE in Action

Dr. Shah notes that the FERGIE system has already “…been great for getting lots of SERS data for undergraduate summer research programs.”

Figure 1 shows Dr. Shah’s experimental setup for performing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with FERGIE.

“With all of the features, FERGIE will be great for instrumental teaching labs since it is so versatile.”
